Lamar University’s College of Education and Human Development Celebrates 60/30 Anniversary


On Feb. 1 the College of Education and Human Development is throwing a giant party to celebrate its College of Education and Human Development 60 Anniversary Logoyears on the Lamar University campus. The College of Education was founded in 1959 and began offering human development in 1989.
   The anniversary evening in the Live Oak Ballroom of the Setzer Student Center will be at 6 p.m. and feature open wine bar and Starbucks bar, dinner, desserts prepared by LU Hospitality Administration students, awards followed by live music by Backyard Cowboys, whose lead singer is Dr. Brett Welch, the director of our doctoral program. The evening will conclude at 10 p.m.
   During the presentation Dr. Bob Spina, Dean of the College of Education and Human Development will give an update of the college and present several awards, including five Crystal Star Alumni awards representing the five disciplines within the college. The honorees are:

-Department of Counseling - Amber Woods, Director of Crisis Services and Adult Intake, Spindletop Center

-Department of Educational Leadership – Dr. Jay Killgo, Superintendent, Vidor ISD

-Department of Family and Consumer Sciences – Kayla Fisher, CEO, Green Light Restaurants

-Department of Health and Kinesiology – Dr. Allen Jackson, Regents Professor, Health and Physical Education, University of North Texas

-Department of Teacher Education – Aja Baise, Second Grade Teacher, Sallie Curtis Elementary, BISD

Additionally, the first Lena Mae Francis Staff Award named in honor of Lena Mae Francis, a well-known and loved staff member in the college for more than 40 years will be awarded to Dimples Jones, the director of certification and testing at LU.
   The first Ruth Olcott Faculty Award given in honor of Ruth Olcott the founding dean of the college will be awarded to Dr. Kaye Shelton, a professor in the department of educational leadership.  
   The College Award will be given to Randy Best, the founder and chairman of Academic Partnerships.
